Greenmarket in the Studio #10

A vision evolving.
While in the process of this particular exploration I’m finding there is a lot of failure. Not failure in the sense of exposure or composition, but failure in concept and vision. And, there’s certainly no value in putting images into my book simply because I did it. Right now, I’m developing the concept [...]

Greenmarket in the Studio #9 (onward to 2010)

I bought a dozen onions and brought them into the studio for the usual shoot ‘em and eat ‘em routine. One by one I placed them on set and, one by one, little personalities revealed themselves. These are the year-end onions, the ones that aren’t in the best of shape, but are still worth eating. [...]

Shooting from the Hip #23

There’s been a debate about this image. Should I have included the funky tomatoes tablecloth under these boxes hot peppers, or cropped it out. I have a couple of shots this week with tablecloths making their debut in my market photos (at least that I know of, I should go and look). The other one, [...]

Shooting from the Hip #21

When fresh flowers, or any fresh fruit or vegetables for that matter, are placed into a clear plastic container or bag, they continue to breathe. They exhale carbon dioxide, creating condensation, vapor and water, becoming the artist’s thumb, smearing and distorting the under painting.
This isn’t the first time I’ve photographed edible flowers in boxes; in [...]

Shooting from the Hip #20

Shoppers love to touch food. They touch for freshness and to smell and to taste. They touch for the sake of feeling something that is as essential as the air we breathe. They are the unseen human presence in my market images and constantly changing the landscapes I capture here.
What happened in front of my [...]

Greenmarket in the Studio #4A

As always, there are many ways to skin a cat (bad metaphor – I have two cats), or should I say capture a bean.
If there is any one piece of advice I can give about shooting in the studio, it’s don’t quit when you think you’ve got the shot. Hey, it’s digital. It’s not like [...]

Greenmarket in the Studio #4

Finally, my first Union Square produce photo shot in the new studio.
I was waiting to get settled before capturing these images of wax beans (crappy name, but that’s what the sign said), also known as yellow, heirloom or golden beans, and almost missed my chance. Except for the folks with the big ORGANIC banner, none [...]

Shooting from the Hip #14 & Greenmarket in the Studio #2

As I continue to shoot the Union Square Farmer’s (Green?) Market, I see a pattern. My studio work of Union Square produce over the past three years has clean crisp lines and, with a tip of the hat to Avedon, is shot unadorned with simple lighting.
On the other hand, the “as is, where is,” [...]

Shooting from the Hip #9

Union Square Market – 3:59PM July 31, 2009
It must have been the ozone in the air from today’s storms.
I had better than usual vegetable activity at the Union Square market today. Zucchini flowers were lining up like dancers and baby purple eggplants were laid out like an old master’s painting. And this, a mesclun salad [...]

Shooting from the Hip # 7

A pile of yellow, green and red peppers at Union Square Market – 3:49PM July 13, 2009
These peppers had a wonderful inside glow from the reflected summer afternoon sunlight. I didn’t quite know what I had captured until I viewed them on a large monitor, as the three inch screen on my Canon didn’t show [...]
